One of my neighbors has a huge magnolia tree that just started flowering again a few days ago. I snapped this photo with my phone while walking downtown to work yesterday afternoon…

Winter Animals

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 at 5:35 pm

I was taking a walk with the dog this afternoon and found this little bird tangled in some plastic netting that was frozen into the ground. It’s head and neck were caught too tightly to free it, so I tore away as much of the netting as I could from the frozen soil and took it home to carefully cut it out…

I checked a field guide and it looks like the bird was a dark-eyed junco. I kept him in a box with food and water for a few hours to rest, then let him fly away from the balcony later in the night. As my fiancée and I opened the door to let him go, he paused for a few moments and then flitted away into the darkness without a sound.

Terrible photo (from my phone), but definitely one of the coolest things I’ve seen in quite some time…
